Comment Moderation
I want people to be able to post comments that appear immediately without having to be approved. But I also want to keep out spam and the anti-spam features interfere with the comment system. For some reason all comments - including mine! - go straight to a spam list. Then I must mark them as "not spam". Then they must be "approved". That is not how this website is supposed to work and I apologize for the inconvenience.-

Babelcon 2008 – I must go to the geeks; they are my people
(Will post about Hurricane Gustav later.) A few weeks ago I squeezed in a few hours at BabelCon 2008 – a science-fiction convention right here in beautiful(?!?) Baton Rouge. Perused the website and decided to drop by Sunday afternoon. After … Continue reading

"The Dispossessed" and the reality of pain
Whenever I am asked to compose a short list of the most important books I have read I always include The Dispossessed by Ursula LeGuin. I enjoy almost everything by this feminist atheist science-fiction writer but The Dispossessed moves me … Continue reading

Dune and Rhetorical despotism
I have been rereading later books in the Dune saga by Frank Herbert. In God Emperor of Dune I came across this exchange between the God Emperor Leto II and his majordomo Moneo: “Religion always leads to rhetorical despotism,” Leto … Continue reading
