Comment Moderation
I want people to be able to post comments that appear immediately without having to be approved. But I also want to keep out spam and the anti-spam features interfere with the comment system. For some reason all comments - including mine! - go straight to a spam list. Then I must mark them as "not spam". Then they must be "approved". That is not how this website is supposed to work and I apologize for the inconvenience.-

Conspiracy not group think (or) Journolist and news media bias
This is huge. If it turns out to be legit. I sort of followed the whole David Weigel on Journolist brouhaha that led to his being let go by the Washington Post. But leftist bias in the news media is … Continue reading

Ross Douthat’s must read article – It’s about class and urban versus rural
Looking at the comments – before they were closed – one wonders how many New York Times readers need help with basic reading comprehension. Ross Douthat nails it. With facts rather than speculation or supposition. He discusses a recent study … Continue reading
China and (blocked) websites

Metropolitan Opera's performance of "Carmen" by Bizet (or) What *is* Carmen?
Last time took eight to see “Turandot” by Puccini. Fairly full theater. People came up to us with tears in their eyes (I am not making that up) to express how much they appreciate young people coming to see the … Continue reading

Falling from space (or) The ultimate loneliness?
Not sure why this has been getting so much attention lately – except perhaps because someone is trying to do this again but from an even higher altitude. On August 16 1960 (then) Captain Joe Kittinger flew in a helium … Continue reading

Defending Senator Henry Reid (but not what he said)
That Senator Harry Reid said some rather bizarre things – about then Candidate Senator Obama being “light skinned” and not speaking with a “Negro dialect” – does not especially upset me. Of course what he said was inappropriate ridiculous and … Continue reading

Corporal punishment as "intrinsically sinful" (or) How ancient church uses Web 2.0 brilliantly
NPR and Ancient Faith Radio are what I listen to 90% of the time. Ancient Faith Radio is brilliant. Funny how the “ancient church” – the Orthodox church(es) – perhaps best exemplify how to use Web 2.0 and modern media. … Continue reading

Unwashed angels in the passenger seat of my car (or) The challenge of strangers who ask for help
During the last few weeks I have emptied my wallet 3 times for strangers who ask for help. Last month getting ready for a Church of the Nations planning meeting in the chapel. Raining hard outside. Bible Study Fellowship is … Continue reading

Memory eternal – two friends in two days
What the heart and the soul can bear. Yesterday got back to the church and was met at the door. “Did you hear the news? L was killed in a car accident”. One of those much loved people who does … Continue reading
